A Venetian Carnival

Philippa Hyde-soprano
Paul Esswood-counter-tenor
Jennifer Janse-cello
Helen Rogers-harpsichord

Venice spirals towards her fall in a whirl of treachery, lust and exuberance.

The Musicke Companye presents a musical tale of La Serenissima: rapturous music from St Mark's, the mists of the lagoon, the wedding of the Doge to the Sea and the revelries and gaiety of Carnivale. Choreographed scenes, authentic Venetian masks, stories of courtesans, lovers, nuns, intrigue and murder.

Music by Monteverdi, Strozzi, Marcello, Lotti, Stradella, Galuppi, Cavalli and Handel alongside the incomparable Red Priest, Antonio Vivaldi.

"People sing in the piazzas, in the streets and on the canals, merchants sing as they sell their merchandise, labourers sing as they leave their places of work, gondoliers sing as they wait for their masters"

  (C. Goldoni, Memoirs de Venise, 1787)
